Categories of Dental Services Provided

General Dentistry

A general dentist can provide services in all areas of dentistry.  The first procedure a dentist performs is a complete and thorough examination of the patient’s mouth.  This includes X-rays to see the structures below the gum line.  This examination allows the dentist to determine what procedures a patient may need to bring them back to dental health.  Some of the procedures listed below may be part of multiple categories.

Restorative Dentistry
This includes procedures to rebuild crack, damaged or diseased tooth structure.  Examples of restorative procedures include: tooth colored fillings, dental crowns and dental bridges.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Using the latest in modern dental technology it is now possible to have the smile of your dreams.  The color, shape and position of your teeth can be easily changed using procedures such as: teeth whitening or bleaching, porcelain veneers and bonding using tooth colored filling materials.

Endodontics or Root Canals
If the nerve in your tooth becomes infected from a deep cavity, cracked tooth or trauma a root canal and a crown maybe necessary. Symptoms of a tooth needing a root canal include: waking up at night with a throbbing toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold food and drink, and a swollen face.

Periodontics or Gum Disease Treatments
Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss.  It is the destruction of the bone supports the teeth.  Gum disease is caused by plaque that forms on your teeth and leads to bone loss.  Gum disease is increases your chances of developing conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes.  Gum disease is treated by professional dental cleaning of various types depending on the severity of the disease.

Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is the treatment of missing, damaged or broken teeth. Procedures commonly used to rebuild and replace teeth include: crowns, bridges, dentures, partial dentures and implants.  Treatments for TMJ problems also fall under this category.

Oral Pathology
This is the detection and treatment of conditions of the mouth.  Oral pathology includes identifying and treating mouth sores and screening for oral cancer.

Oral Surgery
Oral surgery is the gentle removal of teeth. Teeth are extracted for many reasons including: infection, disease, fracture or cracked teeth, or insufficient space for the tooth.   Oral surgery includes the removal of wisdom teeth that can be impacted or locked in place below the gum line.  Left in place wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, decay, damage to adjacent teeth, crowding and jaw fracture.  Wisdom teeth can be causing significant damage even if you do not have any symptoms.

Sedation Dentistry or Sleep Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is a way to have all of your dental needs treated without the sight, sounds and memory of the procedure. Sedation dentistry relaxes you enough that you’ll be completely unaware that you are at a dentist office. When everything is done, you’ll wake up with little or no memory of the procedure. You can catch up on years of putting off trips to the dentist in as little as one or two visits.  A Nurse Anesthetist provides the IV sedation while Dr. Shamblott provides the dental services.

Sleep Apnea Treatments
Sleep Apnea is common potentially life threatening condition that is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep.  Left untreated, sleep apnea can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain, memory problems, weight gain, and impotency.  Treatment for sleep apnea can include CPAP, oral appliances and surgery.
