Nitrous Oxide Laughing Gas

Minneapolis Sedation Dentist Emergency Dentist and Cosmetic Dentist of Choice

Shamblott Family Dentistry

Nitrous oxide laughing gas is used to reduce dental anxiety and reduce pain. There is no amnesia with the gas, just relaxation.

Nitrous oxide is a combination of two gases: nitrous oxide and oxygen. A special mask is placed over the patient’s nose to deliver the gas. The patient breathes through their nose as best they can, trying to minimize mouth breathing. At the end of the appointment the patient receives 10 minutes of pure oxygen to remove any effects of the nitrous oxide laughing gas from their body. You can safely drive yourself home.

While breathing nitrous oxide you may experience several different sensations including tingling in fingers and toes, a warm sensation, a feeling of euphoria, or a sensation of floating in the air. For the best possible experience with nitrous oxide laughing gas, do not eat anything for at least three hours before the dental appointment.

Nitrous oxide laughing gas works very fast. You will begin to feell its effects in just a few minutes. The effect a patient is feeling from the gas can be adjusted up or down almost instantly.

Nitrous oxide laughing gas is very safe; there are very few side effects. Laughing gas is commonly used on children and adults. It is safe to use with heart disease, high blood pressure, angina, asthma, liver disease, diabetes and other medical conditions. It is also useful at minimizing or even eliminating the gag reflex.

Nitrous oxide laughing gas is not recommended for women who are or may be pregnant, patients with emphysema or multiple sclerosis, or patients with claustrophobia.

Nitrous Oxide is so effective at reducing dental anxiety and making people comfortable during dental appointments that it is FREE at Shamblott Family Dentistry.
