One habit that some teenagers may have is frequent snacking on unhealthy foods. Frequent snacking and drinking soda can lead to decay. If you’re going to drink soda, you should brush after drinking and try not to sip it throughout the day. Teenagers can use anti cavity rinses such as ACT or Listerine Total Care (in the purple bottle) to also prevent decay. These rinses work best if used right before bedtime and with nothing to eat or drink afterwards.
Teenagers may also be involved with sports and are at risk for oral injuries to the mouth or jaw. Mouth guards should be worn for all contact sports and the mouth guard is a customized guard that can be made by your dentist. If you are playing sports and wearing a mouth guard, you will want to eliminate your consumption of sports drinks since the guards can trap sugar and residual liquid.
Some adults may experience dry mouth with symptoms including: soreness in the mouth, cracking in the corners of mouth, and difficulty speaking. Dry mouth is sometimes caused by medications such as antidepressants and decongestants. Taking good care of your teeth and gums is important if you are experiencing dry mouth. Biotene can be used to ease these symptoms.
If you have dentures, you will want to make sure to take good care of them to keep them looking good and fitting well. Dentures should be cleaned every day with a denture brush and cleanser solution. You should keep your dentures moist if they are not being worn. If dentures need to be adjusted, you always want to see your dentist!
