Extractions may be one of the most commonly dreaded dental procedures, but they don’t have to be! Your dentist can administer nitrous oxide before giving the local anesthetic and starting the procedure. During the procedure you can listen to music (and at our office) even watch a movie!

After an extraction you can expect a small amount of bleeding to occur, but the most important things are to avoid are smoking or drinking through a straw. Both smoking and drinking through a straw can dislodge the blood clot and slow down the healing process.

The most important thing to do the days after an extraction is applying ice to the outside of the mouth on the side of the mouth the extraction was done. Applying the ice will bring down the swelling and thus reduce some of the pain. If a dry socket does occur, you should see your dentist right away. Your dentist will clean the site and place a medication dressing in the socket, which will provide pain relief.
