Ever wondered about dental care for seniors? Dr. Scott gave helpful tips for the mature mouth during his last radio show The Waiting Room on FM107.1 last Sunday, May 15th.
One common question about seniors and dental care is whether they should still be concerned about developing cavities. To answer that question, Dr. Scott points out that cavities can actually be more frequent in older adults for many reasons. One reason is that some seniors today were not exposed to fluoride in drinking water like many people are today. Also, dry mouth from certain medications can lead to more tooth decay.
Dr. Scott also gave some helpful tips to those with dentures. Dentures need to be cleaned every day and should be replaced every 7-8 years because of changes in bone and gum tissue. You will want to make sure to never sleep in the dentures or try to adjust them yourself. If dentures begin to fit loose there is a chance they will need to be adjusted or relined.
